Brigit McDannell is a dedicated and accomplished health informatics specialist with a strong background in healthcare data analysis, population health, biological sciences research, and interdisciplinary study. Her education, experience, and leadership roles highlight her commitment to improving healthcare outcomes through informed decision-making and innovative healthcare policy solutions.

In her role at HMA, she provides data analytics support for both internal colleagues and client stakeholders. Brigit leverages programming languages like R, SQL, and Python to decipher complex healthcare datasets, unlocking valuable insights for clients. She is responsible for generating data visualizations in both PowerBI and Tableau to drive strategic decision-making. This includes building statistical models, validations, and machine learning algorithms.

Brigit creates dashboards from a wide array of public and administrative datasets, responding to data requests for internal stakeholders and extracting data from HMA’s licensed population health platforms, Metopio and Torch Insight. She also serves as the primary data steward for the commercial business intelligence tool, Definitive Healthcare. She builds statistical, policy, and machine learning models, ensuring rigorous validation.

Before joining HMA, Brigit worked as an informatics research specialist within the Learning Health Sciences Department at the University of Michigan Medical School. In this role, she applied comprehensive resource management strategies to build an extensive environmental literature scan on real-world data interoperability standards in collaboration with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). She synthesized results from the environmental scan and key informant interviews to draft a summary report. This report evaluated the then-current use of Electronic Health Record (EHR) data as real-world evidence, aiming to inform future research and policy decisions related to regulatory matters. Brigit established evidence of rigorous search methodologies, including descriptive statistical analysis on categorical data and metadata, ensuring the credibility of her findings.

During her tenure at the Michigan Health Information Network (MIHIN), Brigit worked as a population health and quality intern, contributing to the development of comprehensive mapping data crosswalks and business rules to enhance interoperability standards. She conducted market research, literature reviews, and data analysis related to self-monitoring, analysis, and reporting technology (SMART) on fast healthcare interoperability resources (FHIR). As a solution specialist intern, she created educational materials for MIHIN’s products.

Brigit gained hands-on lab experience as a research technician at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, where she led projects on therapeutic drug dependencies, conducted drug combination analyses, and supported postdoctoral research. At the bench, she determined and validated synergistic chemotherapeutic drug combinations, aiming to improve treatment outcomes in patients with Ewing sarcoma.

Brigit holds a Master of Health Informatics from the University of Michigan School of Information, a Bachelor of Arts in neuroscience from Smith College, and a Precision Health certificate from the Rackham Graduate School at the University of Michigan.

In her free time, she enjoys cooking, practicing yoga, dancing, watercolor painting, and volunteering.
