Andy McMahon has over two decades of executive experience spanning healthcare, housing, human services and community development. Leveraging his policy, financing and programmatic vertical market expertise, he has demonstrated success forging cross-sector partnerships and developing integrated care initiatives aligned with partners’ goals.
Before joining Health Management Associates, Andy was UnitedHealthcare (UHC)’s Community & State vice president of health policy and, most recently, vice president of impact investments with UHC’s parent company UnitedHealth Group (UHG). Initially, Andy worked with UHC Medicaid plans across the country on a number of policy issues to improve care for the most complex care populations.
Andy also developed numerous innovative community partnership efforts, including UHC Catalyst, a community-based multi-sector initiative that focused on community listening and convening, shared decision making with community-based partners, and co-creation of interventions to address agreed upon community health disparities. The initiative brought together community stakeholders, including managed care organizations (MCOs), federally qualified health centers (FQHCs), public housing agencies, (PHAs), food banks and other organizations, and was scaled up, ultimately expanding into more than 25 communities.
Andy spearheaded the design and implementation of an expanded and diversified tax credit and social impact investment strategy. These initiatives included social impact investment in the Neighborhood Health Equity Fund, Impact Appalachia, and Maycomb Community Capital that focused on building health clinics to expand care, financing pre-K education programs, and other efforts to improve community outcomes. He also led the effort to create a $200 million-plus Health & Housing Investment Fund. Later, Andy led the expansion of UHG’s social investment strategy, resulting in substantial increases in community partners across the country.
Prior to his work with UHC and UHG, Andy worked with the Corporation for Supportive Housing (CSH) in a number of progressive roles, honing his expertise leading the organization’s national policy and external affairs efforts. Diversifying his experience, Andy also has a background in public service, working for the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development and the City of Boston Homelessness Services.
Andy earned his Master of Public Administration from Northeastern University and his bachelor’s degree in economics from Ithaca College.
He volunteers on two nonprofit boards, spends time outdoors golfing, hiking and being on the water; and practices mindfulness, a multi-year journey. He lives in Minneapolis with his two sons.
