A dedicated research professional, Gabriel Velazquez leverages his background in public health program management and coordination to effect positive change within underrepresented communities. Gabriel’s research experience includes overseeing quality assurance, regulation adherence and data management. He is familiar with Excel, SPSS, and electronic health record (EHR) software.
Before joining Health Management Associates, Gabriel was the research coordinator of Beinestar Human Services Inc.’s Estoy PrEParado/I’m PrEPared project, a pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and HIV prevention program. Gabriel was responsible for developing and delivering the comprehensive education program as well as conducting and coordinating outreach efforts. He cultivated strategic partnerships with community stakeholders and ensured adherence to informed consent processes and ethical considerations while recruiting participants for the research study.
In addition to the Estoy PrEParado/I’m PrEPared study, Gabriel has helped facilitate studies for California State University, Long Beach’s (CSULB) Center for Health Equity Research (CHER) and CSULB’s Center for Latino Community Health, Evaluation and Leadership Training. With CHER’s Exploring Tobacco Exposure from Recreational Marijuana (E-TERM) Study, Gabriel conducted literature reviews on tobacco cessation strategies and related public health topics to inform research design and support evidence-based interventions. For CSULB’s Center for Latino Community Health, Evaluation and Leadership Training’s Eat, Play Go! Integrated Transdisciplinary Research, Education, and Extension (EPG) Project, he supervised a team of health educators and support staff charged with developing and delivering comprehensive health education programs on nutrition, physical activity, disease prevention, and other related topics. He assisted with data collection, draft preparation, graphics creation, and reporting for both studies.
Gabriel also has clinical experience, having worked as a health education and wellness coordination intern with Alta-Med Health Services and a community resource navigator with the LGBTQ+ Center Long Beach. In these positions he worked with health professionals to connect individuals with community resources. Gabriel gained experience working with EHR software and maintained the LGBTQ+ Center’s database of community resources.
Gabriel earned his Master of Public Health and his bachelor’s degree in community health education from California State University, Long Beach. He has an associate’s degree from Long Beach City College, and he is fluent in both English and Spanish.
